Peterson Wetland Mitigation | |

|
This project provided for mitigation of impacts to wetlands associated with the reconstruction of Montana State Highway 1 between Maxville and Drummond in Granite County, MT. The result was the creation of approximately 11 acres of new wetlands; enhancement of eight acres of wetlands by creating different habitat types; and enhancement of 90 acres of wetlands through protection and planting of riparian areas. Groundwater, supplemented by deeded irrigation water rights from Flint Creek, provided the necessary hydrology for the newly created wetlands. Irrigation water is supplied from an existing irrigation ditch passing through the western edge of the property. Four irrigation division structures were constructed, directing water to the wetland pools. Suitable wetland topsoil was excavated, stockpiled, and replaced within the limits of construction for the shallow pools. Excess material was placed in soil berms, and all disturbed areas were seeded to prevent erosion and invasion of noxious weeds. Today, travelers along Highway 1 can enjoy birds and other wildlife along this scenic route. |
