The Brooks/South/Russell intersection is in the heart of Missoula’s Midtown. It is a highly developed urban area with many businesses, residences, and the Missoula County Fairgrounds. Fixing “Malfunction Junction,” as the intersection was known statewide, required finding a solution that would meet traffic needs as well as serve adjacent land uses.
WGM Group used state-of-the-art traffic modeling software to demonstrate to the public how the project would work. This traffic simulation provided a way for the public to visualize the project. In addition, the model provided data on total network delay, fuel consumption, and air pollution. By comparing the proposed solution with the existing conditions, WGM Group was able to show that the project would reduce delay and air pollution while saving fuel.
The once dreaded “Malfunction Junction” is now a vibrant part of Missoula with improved sidewalks, landscaping, and bike lanes. Since reconstruction, the area has seen a rise in redevelopment, new businesses, private investment, and the formation of the Missoula Midtown Association, a group of business owners, residents, and community leaders working to further improve the Midtown area. Through innovative design, WGM Group successfully reconfigured the intersection, meeting the expectations and financial goals of the City.
