  Wye Area Sewer System

Project Description

The Wye Area Sewer System will provide environmentally sound sewer service to approximately 1,566 acres of industrial, commercial, and residential land located northwest of the City of Missoula, MT.

This project addresses important water quality issues by:

  • Extending municipal sewer
  • Eliminating drainfields
  • Encouraging connections for community drainfields

This work is designed to protect groundwater and mitigate further degradation of the Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers. Additionally, it will lessen the contamination of the Missoula
Valley Aquifer, which is designated the area's “sole source aquifer” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The project will result in:

  • Over 70,000 feet of *gravity mains
  • Over 250 manholes
  • Three *pump stations
  • Nearly 17,000 feet of *force mains
  • All related *appurtenances

A Rural Special Improvement District (RSID) has been implemented to fund the project, which has an overall budget of 10.1 million dollars.

*Gravity Main - A pipeline that facilitates the transfer of wasterwater with gravity.
*Force Main - A pressurized pipeline that facilitates the transfer of wasterwater against gravity.
*Pump Station - A structure used to move wastewater uphill, against gravity.
*Appurtenance - Anything that is or becomes part of the property because it is attached or closely related to the land. It may be a structure such as a well, barn or garage; or it may be a right or interest enjoyed by the previous owner, such as an easement.

Progress

After many years of planning, the final phases of the Wye Area Sewer System (RSID) 8489 are finally underway!

In 2007, the City sewer was extended to the Wye Area, northwest of Missoula near the interchange of Highway 93 and Interstate 90. That project completed construction of two pump stations and related mains. The remainder of that system is now being built to service all of the residents within RSID 8489. The project is anticipated to be complete by spring 2010.
