Once a vital part of the wood products industry in Western Montana, the Old Sawmill District operated as a lumber mill using the adjacent Blackfoot and Clark Fork rivers to transport, and process logs on this 46-acre site. Even though the mill closed in the late 1980s, industrial manufacturing continued for a decade, but has since been vacant.

Now the Old Sawmilll District in Missoula Montana is an exemplary project of Brownsfield Revitalization and infill development by incorporating adaptive re-use, environmental clean-up, expansion of the riverfront park system, and urban mixed-use development in the center of this Rocky Mountain regional hub.

An extensive public participation process combined with a detailed market analysis helped to guide the mix and location of uses, which include multi-use residential and commercial property with parklands, common area, parking for the new Civic Stadium, and a continuation of the riverfront trail system, providing a much needed link to facilitate walking and bicycling to downtown, and the commuter bicycle trail that serves the central community and University areas.

WGM Group provided land use planning, project management, public relations, surveying, and engineering in the development of the conceptual plans for the site. The project received unanimous approval from the Missoula City Council in April of 2007. Environmental cleanup of the site is currently underway, and infrastructure improvements are expected to begin in 2008.
