Missoula Downtown

Downtown Statue

Much of Missoula’s downtown infrastructure was built in the 1950’s and 60’s, and is approaching the end of its service life. While the downtown experienced a resurgence in the 1990’s, little was done to improve the appearance and function of the streets. Poor lighting, antiquated traffic signals, poor access and circulation, and the need for more parking topped the list of downtown infrastructure needs.

In 2005, WGM Group prepared a master plan to identify needs and opportunities for improving Missoula’s downtown. The study focused on the existing street network and related infrastructure in the downtown area.

The process included extensive public involvement, with a committee of municipal and community based members, and a public open house. It also included: an analysis of the traffic flow and circulation in downtown; development of detailed streetscape guidelines; recommendations to increase parking; and establishment of funding and budget parameters. The recommended improvements are now being designed and constructed as funding becomes available.

By providing a pedestrian-friendly streetscape, improved access and circulation, and additional parking, the City hopes to enhance the existing downtown, and create opportunities for new business and residential use.
